Herceg Novi is located at about thirty kilometers from the two airports, Dubrovnik and Tivat, at the entrance to one of the most beautiful bays in the Mediterranean, Bay of Kotor.
The city was founded in 1382.g. with numerous cultural and historical monuments, especially in the ‘old town’.
Herceg Novi is famous for its greenery, mimosa carnival, the beautiful coast and the climate with over 260 sunny days a year.
In the southeastern part of the Adriatic coast, in a deep cut between the highest coastal mountain chains is the Bay of Kotor. It represents the most indented part of this coast and is one of the most beautiful bays in the Montenegrin coast. At entrance to the bay, on the northern hilly coast, below the coastal hills of mountain Orijen (1892 m), lies the town of Herceg Novi.
Herceg Novi, a city of history and tradition, is situated in the late 14th century at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor. The city was, after the Turkish period, in the hands of the Spaniards, Venetians, French, etc. This has prompted the architecture of the city to intertwine elements of Romanesque, Byzantine and Oriental styles.
Special attractions of Herceg Novi are Spaniola, Kanli Kula and Forte Mare, City Museum, the Modern Art Gallery and Savina monastery, founded in 1030. The monastery is surrounded with extremely rich Mediterranean vegetation, and consists of three churches, including the Church of Saint Sava. This Church is situated on a wooded hill and has cultural treasures from the time of Nemanjic. This church is linked to the monks of the monastery Tvrdos from Herzegovina who took refuge here to avoid the Turkish assaults.
Today, Herceg Novi is a modern Mediterranean town with a large number of traditional cultural events throughout the season. Among them, in addition to Mimosa Festival are: The Film Festival, winter fine art, etc. The characteristics of Herceg Novi are its climate and flora. Hardly anywhere in the smaller space, there are climatic differences greater than here, where someone can at the same time to enjoy the warm coastal sun and at the same time can see snow from the surrounding mountains. Herceg Novi is also the city of flowers that his sailors brought from all over the world. It is particularly known for the mimosa, which blooms in winter (early February) and in its honor Days of Mimosa is held every year.
